Week 4 High School Football Poll

There hasn't been much change at the top of the poll all season. La Salle and Barrington come in at 1 and 2, yet again. It'll be interesting to see what happens with those two and East Providence all start to play each other in Division I. It starts this week when East Providence visits Barrington.

Apparently Middletown scoring 78 last week wasn't enough to move them any closer to the top 5. The Islanders still are holding strong at No. 7, the top team in Newport County. Tiverton has a chance to move way up the ladder this weekend if the Tigers can pull off a win over No. 6 Ponaganset.

After dropping consecutive games to two of the top three teams in the state, Portsmouth has a bye this week before getting thrown back into the fire with a game at Barrington on Oct. 16. The bad news is, the Patriots very well could lose a third straight. The good news is, they also could run the table after that with games against St. Ray's, Cranston West, North Kingstown and Rogers.

I have a few questions. first, do you believe that Middletown should be moved up or down in the rankings? or should they stay the same? Second, do you believe them putting up 78 points was unneccessary and excessive, or were they just playing football? Finally, do you believe that by putting up 78 points and spreading the ball around, albeit against probably the worst team in the state, they have proven that they are more than just rico?

All good questions. There are currently four teams - La Salle, West Warwick, Middletown and Hope - in the state who are undefeated. La Salle is from Division 1, WW from D-II and the latter two are from D-IV. So do I think Hope would hang with La Salle? No.

But I think Middletown is getting noticed statewide, and people ask me a lot about Rico. "Is he really that good?" I think he's one of the better backs in the state, no matter what division, and I think he's single-handedly pumping excitment into this year's Thanksgiving Day game.

If Tiverton can knock off Ponaganset this weekend, you'll see idle Middletown move up.

As far as the 78 points, that's something I've only seen once before. I didn't see the game, so I can't really comment on whether or not the score was run up, but Middletown threw the ball just six times in the game. So at least they were keeping it on the ground and trying to run out the clock.
