Shoot first, talk later

The day that has become one of my favorites (albeit somewhat stressful) from a sportswriting perspective is all but upon us.

The Newport Daily News 3-Point Shootout is Saturday night at 7 at Salve Regina University.

It should be an interesting competition, as it has been in its previous two years. This year's competitors are:

Boys
Rogers: Trevor Morgera, Cody Platt
Middletown: Matt Kendall, Bowen Leys
Portsmouth: Pat Fagan, Ryan DeLuca
Tiverton: Alex Rosa, Tyler Mulcahy
St. George’s: Josh Fuhrmeister, Kelly Bullock
Portsmouth Abbey: Chuck Weeden, Matt Brigham

Girls
Rogers: Annie Galvin, Sienna Benson
Middletown: Kacey Challoner, Lauren Paiva
Portsmouth: Megan Sewall, DonAndrea Myette
Tiverton: Sam William, Haley Higginbottom
St. George’s: Jordan Watson, Laura Lowry
Portsmouth Abbey: Kathleen Timmons, Abby Shea

Scott Barrett and I have our predictions about who will win, but we'll keep those quite at least until after the competition.

But I'm curious who others like to win this thing. Objectivity is not necessary. Feel free to put your support behind a friend or teammate or your kid's friend or teammate.

Who ya got?

Daily News 3-Point Shootout is Saturday

This Saturday night, The Newport Daily News will conduct its third annual 3-Point Shootout and Shooting Stars competition. This is one of my favorite events, since sportswriter Josh Krueger and I came up with the idea a few years back.

Firstly, we get to interact with the high school shooters, and secondly, it brings shooters from all six county schools together for one event. It tends to be a fun night for all involved.

As it has been since its inception, the shootout is free and open to the public, but we’re asking for a $1 donation, which will go to Newspapers in Education. We’ve also changed the site, shifting from Portsmouth High School to Salve Regina University, which was kind enough to allow use the Rodgers Recreation Center.

What will be interesting is the girls competition, with last year’s winner, Sam William of Tiverton, facing the 2008 winner, Kathleen Timmons of Portsmouth Abbey. There will be a new boys champion after the graduation of Tiverton’s Zach Guillette.

But I don’t want to get too much into the shooters, because we’ll have a full preview in Friday’s edition of The Daily News.

Why I go against the grain on Tiger

The world, it seems, is against Tiger Woods. He's lost nearly all of his endorsement deals, and every time he opens his mouth, everyone is ready to crucify him, saying it was completely and utterly scripted.

I saw bits and pieces of the two interviews he gave on Sunday night, and I didn't see scripted. I saw well-thought-out answers that didn't shed too much light, but at the same time gave us enough to draw some conclusions. He's admitted his infidelities, he's admitted he's hurt a number of people and he's taking 100 percent of the blame.

What more do you want? Talk radio bozos are lambasting him for being a jerk and scumbag, and by his own admission, to some degree, he is. But what if that was your best friend? Or your brother, or someone very close to you. Would you have the same reaction? Would you support that person or carry the same opinion you have now? I get this feeling it would be different if that person was a relative or friend.

Tiger has made few friends through this entire ordeal, and he said he's worried about the reaction of the galleries when he tees off at Augusta in a few weeks. But I'll be honest, I've changed my tune about the man. I used to root against Tiger on Sundays only because I wanted to see someone other than the guy in red win.

Now I'm pulling for him to win his fifth green jacket. Why? Because I always root for the underdog.
