This Saturday night, The Newport Daily News will conduct its third annual 3-Point Shootout and Shooting Stars competition. This is one of my favorite events, since sportswriter Josh Krueger and I came up with the idea a few years back.
Firstly, we get to interact with the high school shooters, and secondly, it brings shooters from all six county schools together for one event. It tends to be a fun night for all involved.
As it has been since its inception, the shootout is free and open to the public, but we’re asking for a $1 donation, which will go to Newspapers in Education. We’ve also changed the site, shifting from Portsmouth High School to Salve Regina University, which was kind enough to allow use the Rodgers Recreation Center.
What will be interesting is the girls competition, with last year’s winner, Sam William of Tiverton, facing the 2008 winner, Kathleen Timmons of Portsmouth Abbey. There will be a new boys champion after the graduation of Tiverton’s Zach Guillette.
But I don’t want to get too much into the shooters, because we’ll have a full preview in Friday’s edition of The Daily News.
