Let's get it on

After what I call a stellar performance by me on Day 1, we're back for some Day 2 blogging. Syracuse, a team I now have a ton of respect for after knocking off UConn in six overtimes in the Big East tournaemnt, is up against an upstart in "Stone Cold" Stephen F. Austin.

As much as I'd like to see Syracuse and Jonny Flynn (who is going to be one heck of a pro) win and move on, you have to love the underdog, especially when they're equipped with the Stone Cold Stunner.

I thought the Hilltoppers was the funniest nickname in the tournament ... until I heard Stephen F. Austin was the Lumberjacks. What kind of nickname is that???

Scott Barrett said...

Kind of fitting for a bunch of Texans. Enjoying your day off?

SheilaM said...

Yes, thanks for asking. If the game keeps going like this I will enjoy it even more!

The Stone Cold Stunner is coming ... beware.

The SFA coach was on ESPN earlier this week and explained that the part of Texas (west Texas, I believe) where the school is located is very woodsy, unlike the worthless desert that characterizes the rest of Texas. Hence the nickname.

Have you seen the Lumberjack mascot, though? Guy is huge. No foam costume necessary. Just some giant guns and a fake axe.

Nice reference (and video). I prefer to think of Stephen F. Austion as the Six Million Dollar Man, but it doesn't look like the Lumberjacks have the technology ... or the basic skills, for the matter.

SheilaM said...

I'll look for the mascot, although that will leave less time for me to check my spelling (Austin, not Austion!)

Hi All, How's it goin' today?

Just FYI - Marquette's High School teams are called the Hilltoppers because, um, the school is on top of a hill. That's your Wisconsin trivia for today. Go Marquette and Go Badgers.

Actually, I get the feeling I may not see too much more of this game, since it's already 20-4.

I saw that interview .. it's not west Texas, though. I guess it's just north of Houston, which is in the eastern part of the state.

I heard the announcer say that Syracuse has been "better, faster, stronger" than SFA. I wonder how long he was working on that one?

This is way too much learnin' for a day off :)

Finally, some Wisconsin trivia!

Tennesee needs to step it up and start blowing oklahoma state out of the water!

Scott Barrett said...

It's an 8-9 game .... why is everyone sold on Tennessee? You should be more worried about Kansas and NDS. This one is close.

how do i get a pic of my mug next to my comment!!

Scott Barrett said...

We wouldn't do that to our readers. I know what you look like.

Good Call cuz!

Let me drop some more useless nickname knowledge on you.
Kettle Moraine High School, my alma mater, is the only school (HS or college) in the country with the nickname Lasers.

My school's claim to fame. Well, that and producing journeyman MLB infielder Joe Randa.

Scott Barrett said...

Really? That's pretty interesting and it's going to make me do a little research into it. I know of a Lancers, whatever that is.

But it all pales in comparison to the "Chelmsford Lions!"

Unknown said...

I can see why only one school in the country calls themselves that, no offense but that is the dumbest mascot I have ever heard.

Rick Grosvenor said...

More useless trivia: Guess which is the most popular nickname, counting high schools and colleges, in the country?

Unknown said...

The Joe Randa thing is cool though

Unknown said...

what is the Eagle Alex?

Scott Barrett said...

Tigers.

liv said...

dumbest mascot, danny? ever heard of the oakmont chipmunks?

Cheryl said...

Warriors?

Isn't there a team around here called the Lancers Josh? Monotony Falls? Pewaukee?

A Lancer would either be somebody who skewers other people/things with a lance or a medical person with a crummy job.

Unknown said...

at least it makes sense!! maybe you guys had a lot of chipmunks in the area or something! A laser??? come on that is bizarre!!

Scott Barrett said...

I thought they were the Oakmont Spartans?

How about the Lenox (Mass.) Millionaires? Now that's lame.

Rick Grosvenor said...

It is Eagles, according to alumnac.com, with a stunning 86 schools using it. Bulldogs was a distant second with 63 and Wildcats and Panthers tied for third with 58 each.
As a disclaimer, I must admit that I found some discrepancies with the Web site, though. Chelmsford was not listed under Lions, and it claims that two schools, Akron and Duquesne, are the Zips. But Duquesne is the Dukes.

Cheryl said...

It's Brookfield Central that has the Lancers.

Rick Grosvenor said...

St. John's/Northwestern Military Academy, my first place of employment as a dish boy, is the Lancers.

Unknown said...

Boo Yea I got it right!!

Unknown said...

I think Lawrence was the Lancers someone in the MVC was.

Cheryl said...

Golden Eagles is lame though. They should have stuck with the Marquette Warriors.

SheilaM said...

At least they're not the Purple Eagles. I mean, really?

Cheryl said...

True but I was always a fan of Al McQuire and the Warriors was a better name. But now we have to be PC.

SheilaM said...

Same with Syracuse, which used to be the Salt Warriors. Then the Orangemen and Orangewomen. And now...just the Orange. Not a great nickname as far as nicknames go.
