Credit Carter Blackburn and Jay Bilas of CBS for providing the newest entry in my list of sports terms I loathe and never want to hear. All day they've been referring to offensive rebounds and putbacks as "stickbacks." What, putbacks wasn't simple enough? Or was it too simple so there needed to be a more confusing term to make sportscasters sound smart?
You can stick "stickbacks" up there with "chalk," as in picking chalk in the NCAA tournament, which apparently means picking all favorites. Where did this one come from, and can we send it back, or better yet, club it over the back of the head and toss it in a ditch somewhere?

Rick uses chalk ... I think you have to be at least 40 to use it. In 10 years, you can bet I'll be all over that one.
Josh- Who are your Final Four?
What are your top 3 upsets?
I have NC, Kan, Tex, UCLA w/ UCLA vs NC = UCLA ... I know I really went out on a limb, but I just can never convince myself to go upset central. I just throw darts and try to get that one team that goes deep, which I think will be USC this year, mainly because of Juice Mayo.
Biggest upsets: Butler over Ten, USC over G-Town, & Pittsburgh over Memphis...
Speaking of Rick, is he going to try to chime in again? Tell him to use Anonymous. It worked for me!
I shouldn't just leave it to Josh... anyone else is welcome to chime in with their final 4 and 3 biggest upsets...
It makes no sense and therefore should be abolished. You write with chalk on a chalkboard, or sidewalk. The NCAA tournament has nothing to do with chalk ... unless you're talking about the Kansas Jayhawks. But I'm not crazy about rock, chalk, either.
Paul, do you and Josh use the same brain? I think that's Josh's Final Four, championship game and champion. Wow.
My biggest upset (I know you all really want to know) is USC over Georgetown to get to the Elite Eight. (Speaking of nicknames, didn't this used to just be the Final Eight, then they decided to go with assonance? Yes, I said it, assonance.)
I have Tennessse (so I hope you're wrong), Kansas, Pittsburgh and UCLA. With Kansas beating Pittsburgh in the final. Gotta love hot teams at the end of the season (save for Georgia).
oh crap... if that's the case, then I'm screwed...
I've got UNC, UCLA, Kansas and Texas and, same as you, UCLA over NC in the final. There just aren't many attractive upset possibilities this year.
As for the upsets I picked, I didn't have many. K-State over USC, Davidson over Gonzaga, Arizona over Duke in round 2.
Other than that, I've got mostly "chalk." I hate myself for even using that in a sarcastic sense.
Seeing as how all of Josh's drinking on the job has killed hundreds and hundreds of his thousands of brain cells, I figure that it doesn't hurt to let him borrow some of my brain from time to time, because obviously, I'm not using it for work today...
By the way, who's got Kentucky?
In case you were wondering, and I know you were, I also hate walk-off home run. Based on the definition, the last play of every baseball game is a walk-off situation. When the game is over, the teams walk off the field. Yet you never hear anyone reference a walk-off double-play ball or a walk-off strikeout. You don't hear these terms, but don't they make just as much sense as walk-off home run?
I watched some of the G-Town vs Pitts Big East Champ game, and that Pittsburgh team looked big and mean. I have Pittsburgh going to the Elite Eight, but man, I wouldn't want to be playing them right now. I don't know anything about their team, but they really took care of G-Town in the final.
is this a private conversation between the 4 of you? I can't remember if i picked Marquette or Kentucky?
I don't have UK, but Marquette needs to make free throws to win this one.
Hopefully nobody ... SEC about to go 0-2. Even the A-10 is 1-1. This is why we need the GATORS!
I think some things just bother you way too much Josh... when did you become such a bitter and cynical old man?
No, Linda .. finally, a voice of reason. Chime in with whatever you'd like to say.
Kentucky is done. Marquette hit its free throws late then came up with a big steal.
This game is part of the reason I don't like Memphis. In a close game like this, they're screwed.
THE WORST FREE THROW SHOOTING TEAM IN THE COUNTRY. That's all you need to know.
I've almost always been bitter and cynical. The old part is, ironically, new.
Quick question: what's anyone's take on Arizona vs. W Vriginia?
Tough call on Arizona-W.Va. WVU's been playing really well lately, especially in the Big East tourney, but Arizona has some of its better players back from injury. I picked Arizona, but I could easily see it going the other way.
I like West Virginia, only because they have an inside-outside game, but you gotta wonder how Arizona is going to respond with Lute Olsen back on the bench.
I like W.Va., too, but I am a bit of a Big East homer
i picked WVU as well but you never know how they'll match up.
... but not as big as Knucklehead3. Did you see his Final Four?
BTW, where's Rick when you need him? He picked UK!
So I'd like an opinion on whether or not you like this rule on the tourney I'm in this year:
upset bonus points: if a team that is ranked 3 seeds higher than its opponent wins, you receive 1.5 times the points for that game
1st round games worth 2 points
ex: 9 beats an 8 = 2 points
10 beats a 7 = 3 points
I don't like that. How do you even keep track of that? How do you make sure the people running it aren't cheating? (Can you tell I'm a word person and not a number person?) I like it better when you get added points for each round you win. (1st round win - 1 pt, 2nd round win - 3 pts., etc.)
Yeah, I'm with Sheila on this. Keep it simple. I, also, am not a numbers person and would have no idea if the person running it was cheating.
